MATHEMATICS LESSON PLAN
Class V | Mathematics
Topics: Money, Multiplication and Division of Large Numbers, and Time
Revision • Problem-Solving • Activity-Based Learning
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lessons, students will be able to:
- Solve problems involving money using the four fundamental operations where appropriate.
- Apply multiplication and division to large numbers accurately.
- Solve word problems involving money and large numbers.
- Add and subtract time expressed in hours and minutes.
- Multiply time durations by whole numbers where appropriate.
- Apply suitable methods to solve real-life problems involving time.
- Estimate answers and check the reasonableness of calculations.
- Work collaboratively and explain mathematical reasoning through a student-led activity.
Procedure: Teaching and Learning Approach
| Step | Teaching Strategy | Resource Used | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. EXPLAIN | Revise the concepts and methods used in Money and Multiplication and Division of Large Numbers. Explain the procedures for adding, subtracting and multiplying time. | Mathematics textbook, teacher explanation and board work | Strengthen conceptual understanding and clarify calculation methods. |
| 2. VISUALISE | Use price lists, bills, number charts and clock representations to illustrate mathematical operations and time calculations. | Textbook illustrations, classroom resources and clock models | Make abstract mathematical concepts concrete and accessible. |
| 3. CONNECT | Relate calculations to shopping bills, budgeting, travel schedules, daily routines and the duration of activities. | Real-life examples, sample bills and classroom discussion | Develop practical understanding and mathematical reasoning. |
| 4. REVISE | Recap important procedures, place-value concepts, regrouping and conversion between hours and minutes. Summarise key steps using worked examples. | Textbook, revision notes and teacher-prepared examples | Strengthen recall and prepare students for independent practice. |
| 5. PRACTISE | Students solve textbook exercises, calculations and word problems on Money, large-number operations and Time. | Mathematics textbook, notebook and worksheets | Improve accuracy, fluency and confidence in problem-solving. |
| 6. CONSTRUCT | Students write calculations in a clear sequence, show working steps and explain the operation selected for each word problem. | Notebook, textbook questions and teacher feedback | Develop mathematical communication and organised presentation of solutions. |
| 7. APPLY | Students complete a practical activity involving shopping calculations or planning a daily schedule using time operations. | Activity sheets, sample price lists, paper clocks and student-created problems | Promote application, collaboration, creativity and independent thinking. |
Student Activity: Maths in Everyday Life
Activity Title: Plan, Calculate and Present
Instructions:
- Students work individually or in small groups.
- Each group creates a simple shopping bill using a list of items and their prices.
- Students calculate the total cost and find the change from a given amount.
- They create a daily schedule containing the starting time and duration of three activities.
- Students calculate the finishing time of each activity using addition or multiplication of time durations, as appropriate.
- Each group presents its calculations and explains the methods used.
Learning Outcome: Students apply mathematical operations to practical situations while developing accuracy, collaboration, reasoning and communication skills.
